How to: Keep kids entertained at your wedding

A wedding is traditionally a family occasion, but when it comes to inviting the kids along, visions of screaming children running round the reception in the middle of the best mans speech can be enough to terrify even the most child-friendly couple.

But help is at hand! Armed with over 27 years of combined experience, Suffolk childcare experts Sue and Emma have created the ideal solution for combining romance and runny noses. Their business: Little Guests Wedding Creche was created in 2010 and since then has provided a professional, reliable and fun alternative to the dreaded ‘no kids allowed’ rule. What's more, their mobile creche facility can be set up at Wedding Venues all over Suffolk.

Run them ragged!
If your Wedding Venue has an outside space then make sure you use it! With a bit of forward planning (and adult supervision at the time) organise sack or egg and spoon races, or borrow hoola hoops, tents and tunnels from friends with kids and build an obstacle course. Providing boxes of age relevant toys such as building bricks, soft toys, books and puzzles will all help keep the kids occupied during your wedding.

Get creative
Set up a large craft table or floor space where the kids imagination can run wild. Arm them with some card, kid-friendly glue, stickers, glitter and anything sparkly you can lay your hands on and you’ll be amazed at what is created. Ensure you have a big pile of paper, card, comics and even colouring books to cut-up and draw on and lots of crayons, chalks and coloured pencils.

Fill the kids up first
Request that your wedding venue serves children first. This will give parents an opportunity to oversee their kids meals before their own food arrives. With their tummies full, most children are much more relaxed.

Provide a ‘doodle’ space during dinner
Kids love to doodle different shapes or pictures and it’s a great way to keep them occupied, especially during the wedding reception. Find a large table and cover it with white butchers paper, then fill cups full of crayons, chalks and felt tips and let the kids loose! An alternative is to provide each kid at a wedding breakfast with an A3 piece of paper to draw on; they’ll be so occupied with doodling that they’ll probably forget they are sat at an adult table at all!

Set up a ‘cosy’ corner
As time ticks on the adults may just be getting into the party spirit but the kids could be fading fast! Cut-down on the chance of tired tantrums by providing a quiet corner where the kids can sit on sofas/bean bags/blankets and watch TV or a DVD.
